Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy have thoughts on Justin Fields, training camp, competition and more

With all those Chicago Bears players who reported today at Halas Hall, general manager Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy met the media today to discuss more topics and you can see their full press conference in the video above. Quarterback Andy Dalton, within linebacker Roquan Smith, and wide receiver Allen Robinson also sat with some questions, and their presses can be found a little further down the page.

The mood of Pace and Nagy was as optimistic as one might expect at this time of year, but there was an extra gleam in their eyes when they knew Justin Fields was on their list. Nagy did not even give a direct “no” when asked about Fields winning the starting quarterback job this time. He mentioned all three of his QBs competing this offseason before ending with one, “We are not even getting into that part of it, we just say listen, go and play ball, be the best you can be. Trust me, like everyone here and in this city, I want Justin Fields to be electric. For us, we are worried about today. ”

Nagy was asked what happens if Fields “crushes” it in the preseason, and with a big smile on his face he said, “that would be great,” and then doubled down with another “it would be great.”

Yes it would.

A few other nuggets form their presses.

  • Pace said he’s pretty sure the Bears list is already 85% vaccinated, and with new COVID protocols in place, it’s a good thing for the team as they prepare for the 2021 season.
  • Rookie left tackle Teven Jenkins will compete with Elijah Wilkinson.
  • Robert Quinn, who has struggled with injuries all his time with the Bears, is healthy and ready to go.
  • The Kindle Vildor is in the mix to start in the corner.
  • Eddie Goldman is back!

Bears starting QB Andy Dalton has impressed the team so far and he has a clear understanding of all the excitement surrounding the team right now.

“I’m not worried about all the things that are going to happen to Justin because it does not affect me. At the end of the day, that’s what I need to do and everything. Justin and I have a really good relationship and I try to help him as much as I can. ”

Roquan Smith has been front and center a few times for the Bears this offseason in these press conference settings, so does that make him the defender?

The Bears picked up their fifth year opportunity, making the next logical step a long-term extension, and there have been a few within linebackers who have been paid late. When asked about his contract status, Smith said, “My time is coming. I’m not so worried about that, ”and that he has just focused on getting better this year.

Allen Robinson wearing a KISS shirt by his press just moved him up on my list of all-time favorite bears.

A-Rob is playing on the franchise brand this year, but his contract is not a motivating factor for him in 2021. “I’m not really focused on that,” Robinson said. “I just want to go out there and be the best player I can be. Everything else when it comes to those things will mostly take care of itself.

“We have been 8-8 the last two years. That’s all the motivation in the world right there. ”

He had some praise for his guy who started out wide, Darnell Mooney. “I think the sky is the limit. He’s a guy who wants to get better, and he’s very eager for that, “and this Robinson quote about Fields is a beautiful thing to hear,” Has definitely the first guy in, last guy out mentality. “
