Public funeral held for Okotok’s mayor

OKOTOKS, ALTA. Okotox Mayor Bill Robertson will rest Saturday after he died earlier this month after a battle with cancer.

Robertson, who died on July 7, was first elected to city council in 1995. He became mayor in 2010.

During his tenure, he saw Okotox grow from fewer than 10,000 people to nearly 30,000.

The public service began at. 13 at the Foothills Centennial Center with a maximum capacity of 450 and overflow seats at the adjacent Pason Centennial Arenas of up to 1,000.

Physical distance was, in fact, according to the wishes of the family.

Close friend and city councilor Ed Sands says he was devastated by Robertson’s death, but reflected on their time together on the council – which spanned about two decades.

“Everyone loved him on many levels,” Sands said. “As a teacher, advisor, mayor and promoter.

“The criticism of the government is ‘You devils spend too much money.’ But Bill was always there, making sure we were not the devils who spent all that money. “

Robertson’s sons spoke to the crowded room.

Mike Robertson said his father was a leader and one that he looks up to.

“He surpassed a father’s duties,” Mike said. “And we only hope to imitate who he was as a man, and a man and a father when we move on without him.”

Robertson was transported by his favorite vehicle, the Darcy Smith Special Events Cruiser, an antique fire truck, from the Centennial Center to a private family service at Okoto’s Cemetery.
