The latest “variant of concern”, the Omicron variant, has been identified in two separate cases in south-west London. The new and potentially more transferable variant was first declared under the strictest classification level by the World Health Organization on Friday 26 November. And since then, a total of 22 cases of the latest variant have been found in the UK, two of which come from Sutton and Wandsworth respectively.
In addition to the London locations, the variant has also been discovered in Essex, Nottinghamshire and two locations in Scotland; all areas have experienced a sharp increase in testing and contact tracking.
