North Bondi ‘Pink House’ by the late actress Valerie Angel Newstead at auction on December 15th

‘Pink House’ by a famous actor whose career spanned 77 years is set to go under the hammer.

North Bondi ‘Pink House’ by the late actress Valerie Angel Newstead, whose career spanned 77 years, has hit the market with a price guide of $ 4.5- $ 5m.

Newstead had a long life in theater and television before her death at the age of 95 in June, with her first appearance in a London production of The Princess and the Woodcutter in 1936, to her last in Sydney in The Prisoner of Second Ave in 2013 at the age of 87.

For television, she starred in a number of popular shows, including Certain Women, Division 4, Matlock Police, Rafferty’s Rules and All Saints.

But locally, she was most famous for being a green thumb, with her garden at 4 Bonus St at one point being recognized as “the best in Bondi”.

When she was 91 in 2017, Newstead appeared in the Wentwoth Courier alongside her good friend and former theater colleague, Dianne Keyowen, who helped rejuvenate the garden.

She then said: “My husband and I started the garden together 25 years ago.

“I’ve always had beautiful gardens, first in Bellevue Hill for 17 years and also Rose Bay for 12 years.”

She had participated in several garden competitions, including The Australian National Awards in 2001, when she had won silver.

In 2019, on the occasion of her 93rd birthday, she was photographed in the house for the launch of her memoir, ‘In the Pink’, which traced the journey of her life.

Newstead – along with her late husband, Harold, a former world champion in the hairdressing industry – had bought the Bonus St property for $ 260,000 in 1988.

Now the four-bedroom home on its 350 sqm block is looking for a new green thumb – the garden has understandably been neglected in recent years.

Raine and Horne Double Bay’s Christophe Serrao and Ric Serrao say it’s attracting the attention of young families ahead of the December 15 auction. There is potential for a comprehensive update or a new family home.
