Nine Russian coronavirus patients die after oxygen supply failure

MOSCOW: Nine coronavirus patients died in Russian hospital in southern city Vladikavkaz after an oxygen pipe burst underground, cutting off supply to an intensive care unit, Russian news agencies reported Monday.
‘Nine patients with coronavirus died from lack of oxygen’ TASS news agency quoted the local health ministry as saying.
“A total of 71 people were in intensive care, not all of them were given oxygen supply,” TASS quoted the ministry as saying.
The regional authorities have agreed with the Ministry of Defense to supply oxygen to all the city’s hospitals from the city of Mozdok, about 80 km north of Vladikavkaz, RIA reported.
“There was a crack in the oxygen pipe of the reservoir, which is underground, and the oxygen supply was cut off,” said acting head of the North Ossetia region, where Vladikavkaz is located. RIA news agency as said.
“Medical personnel have started to connect the patients on the ventilators to oxygen tanks. Oxygen tanks have started arriving,” acting head of North Ossetia Sergei Menyailo said.
