Lokomotiv’s loss will come as a blow to Rangnick – who sought to prove his worth ahead of a potential move to Manchester United.

Rangnick is set to become Manchester United’s interim manager until the end of the season after agreeing terms to a six-month contract at Old Trafford.

The 63-year-old German coach will replace Ole Gunnar Solskjær – who was fired after United’s embarrassing defeat to Watford last week.

Rangnick has a good relationship with the Old Trafford hierarchy after speaking to the club before appointing Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho.

He also interviewed for the Everton job before Carlo Ancelotti took over at Goodison Park in December 2019.

The former Schalke and RB Leipzig boss has maintained links with seniors at Old Trafford and in particular the club’s football director John Murtough.

However, Rangnick has only won a major trophy as manager – the German Cup in 2011 with Schalke. As a result, people have questioned his suitability for the job at United.

Nevertheless, Rangnick has been credited with developing Gegenpress and has proven to be an inspiration to Premier League coaches Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel.

Therefore, United believe he is the right one for the job, as it would be too difficult to award Mauricio Pochettino from Paris Saint-Germain in the middle of the season.

Lokomotiv chairman Plutnik has almost confirmed Rangnick’s move to Manchester United.

Speaking ahead of their Europa League clash with Lazio on Thursday night, he said “everything will be fine” when asked how the club felt about Rangnick’s departure.

The locomotive chief said: ‘Things are good. We are now focused on the game. We think after the match. Everything will be fine.’
