Latest news from politics: ‘Determination’ on all sides to end Brexit stand-off without Article 16, says Michael Gove

TThe EU said it had taken a “major step” to resolve post-Brexit problems with Northern Ireland, but called on Britain to compromise so it could reach an agreement.

Following a meeting between Brexit Minister Lord Frost and European Commission Vice-President Maros Sefcovic, an EU statement, despite “progress”, stressed that there is still “a real urgency” to address the issue.

“We now need to push and get this crucial issue across the board. This is a real test of political goodwill. The EU, for its part, is convinced that our proposed solution, which addresses all the concerns raised by the industry, will bring much- needed clarity and promote a positive political momentum, “the statement read.

“In the field of customs, there has been an initial useful commitment at the technical level. These discussions, which aim to reduce, not eliminate, customs processes significantly, should be continued.

“At the same time, we urge the British Government to take a clear step towards us in the field of health and phytosanitary controls in order to reciprocate the great step that the EU has taken.

“The EU-proposed solution will lead to a very significant simplification of certification and a reduction in controls. Identity and physical controls will be reduced by about 80% compared to the controls currently required.”

The couple will meet again in London next week.
