Nickelodeon star JoJo Siwa – who came out as part of the LGBTQ community in January – will make history as the first “Dancing With the Stars” contestant to be matched with a same-sex partner, ABC announced in a post on social media advertising for the show’s 30th season.
“I’m so excited to be a part of ‘Dancing With the Stars,’ season 30, and to dance with a girl,” Siwa, 18, said in the promo clip. “I think it’s so cool.”
JoJo’s partner will be announced during the show’s season premiere.
The American series will follow in the footsteps of its British equivalent, “Strictly Come Dancing”, which in 2020 allowed Olympic boxer Nicola Adams to be paired with a woman at her request, the BBC reported at the time.
Siwa came out as part of the LGBTQ community earlier this year, but has been careful not to label herself too specifically.
“That’s how I want to find out. I like ‘queer,'” she told People in April. Technically, I would say I’m pansexual because that’s how I’ve always been my whole life … just like my human being is my human being. “
Alumni “Dance Moms” later opened up to Demi Lovato — who came out as non-binary in May — about her journey, telling the singer that they were largely responsible for Siwa’s own “gay awakening.”
“Do you remember your dancer? Her name is JoJo Gomez and you did ‘Cool for the Summer’ together,” Siwa told Lovato, 28, in an episode of the podcast “4D with Demi Lovato”.
“I remember seeing it and just being a little too interested,” she explained.
Siwa and her boyfriend, Kylie Prew, have been discovered and have been enjoying various dates since they got together. They have been dating for just under seven months.
