‘I officially received Trikafta’: Ottawa woman with cystic fibrosis receives life-saving medication

OTTAWA – A 23-year-old Ottawa woman with cystic fibrosis received a life-saving medication this week and now promises to keep fighting until every single CF patient has it “in their hands.”

Last week, CTV News Ottawa introduced you to Sara Aldrich, who said her private health insurance would not cover the $ 300,000 a year for the drug Trikafta. Trikafta is approved for use in Canada, but is not covered by her private insurance.

In a post on Facebook, Aldrich said she was notified by OHIP + last week that her application to cover the cost of the drug had been approved.

“I am almost 24 years old and realize that from today I will never have to live another day with the fear of how many days I have left,” Aldrich said in a post Tuesday. “The day has come. I OFFICIALLY RECEIVED TRIKAFTA.”

Cystic Fibrosis Canada called Trikafta “the greatest innovation in the treatment of cystic fibrosis”, adding that it can treat up to 90 percent of Canadians with cystic fibrosis.

“My lung function is the lowest it has ever been and I can not see it ever go up again unless I get Trikafta,” Aldrich said last week.

Aldrich was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at an early age and has mostly lived an active life.

“I have seen my lung function go from the 90s to the 40s in 3 years. I have been told that there are no options left,” Aldrich said on Facebook. “The only thing left that could possibly save me from a life that ends before it even began is the miracle cure called Trikafta.”

Aldrich says the reception of Trikafta begins his journey with “finally being able to achieve all the goals I have set for myself.”

“As much as I want to say that this is the best day of my life, the truth is that it’s bitterly sweet. Even though I have the medication that will save them with CF, I still see my brother struggling with the same “problems that I have. have been dealing with over the years,” Aldrich said.

“My brother is someone I’ve always looked up to, and to be honest he’s more deserving of this medicine than I am. The harsh reality is that I’m sitting here and TIGER about the insurance companies approving this drug for EVERYONE with Cystic Fibrosis. If you think I’m done fighting just because I’ve got tricafta, you’m wrong. My big brother, my best friend, my hero also needs this medicine. As well as thousands by others. And I will NOT stop until every single CF patient has it in their hands. “
