The daughter of an 82-year-old man who was surrounded and attacked by a group of people riding bicycles and ATVs said her father is “lucky he’s alive.”
Suffering serious injuries, the victim, a Brookline resident, remains in the hospital but is expected to survive, Massachusetts State Police said.
“He described it as a nightmare,” she told NBC 10. “He said it was something you wanted to see out of a movie, there was someone smashing his windows and hitting him at the same time.”
His daughter, who was not identified for fear of family safety, told the TV station that her father had bruises and a wound in his head and is still having trouble breathing.
Around 7.30pm on November 18, the victim was driving a 1996 Buick Century from Park Drive to Boylston Street as 35 motorcycles and ATVs approached him, police said. The bicycles forced the man onto a curb on the right side of the road, where several of them started smashing the windows of his car, authorities said.
The victim was then able to drive away toward Storrow Drive in an attempt to get to a police station for help. But then the dirt bikes and ATV riders followed him and started kicking and hitting the Buick again.
In an attempt to get away, the victim Cambridge Street took the exit at the DoubleTree Hotel in Allston, but the traffic made him stop, police said. As he rolled down his window to ask for help, police said one of the riders approached him and started beating him through the window. Meanwhile, others have reportedly kicked his car and thrown a piece of pipe against the car’s rear window. Another threw a large rock through a window in the car.
Eventually, the 82-year-old man turned onto Cambridge Street in Allston and into Joe’s Kwik Market, where he left his car and fell to the ground. The Boston EMS responded and transported him to St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center.
“He’s still beaten and swollen, he’s still in a lot of pain, but he’s getting stronger and getting better every day,” his daughter told NBC 10. “It’s the hardest thing for us to wrap our heads around the fact that there are people out there. there is violence, anger, carelessness. “
The family reportedly do not know why the man was attacked or what the riders’ intentions were. Police are investigating the incident.
