At a news conference Wednesday, DeSanti’s reporters said that 95% of people admitted to state hospitals for COVID-19 complications have not been vaccinated at all, suggesting that “vaccines save lives”, especially with regard to to nursing homes.

“If you look at the people who are admitted to hospitals…. over 95% of them are either not fully vaccinated or not vaccinated at all, ”said DeSantis. “These vaccines save lives. They reduce mortality. ”

DeSantis also said vaccinated people will not experience the current wave of new COVID-19 cases in the state, saying he is “slightly frustrated” with state jurisdictions that still enforce mask mandates and argue that these jurisdictions suggest that the vaccines do not work.

“It simply came to our notice then that the vaccines were not working. I think this is the worst message you can send to people at this point because I think the data has been really, really good in terms of preserving people…. save people’s lives … reduce mortality dramatically, ”DeSantis said.

DeSantis’ remarks come after the White House announced last week that nEarly 20 percent of the country’s new coronavirus infections now occur only in Florida.
