COP26: Sadiq Khan opens green investment showcase

Sadiq Khan joins Nicola Sturgeon to open a green investment showcase at the Cop26 Summit in Glasgow.

The Mayor of London and the Prime Minister will use the event to detail how investors can support the green technologies of the future.

On Wednesday, the international summit on climate change has its “Finance Day” – focusing on the role of investment in tackling environmental issues.

The green investment showcase hosts Scottish Enterprise, in which technology companies seeking investment participate.

Sturgeon said: “Cop26 provides what is possibly our best chance to promote the societal and economic change required by the climate emergency and deliver lasting action towards net-zero and a climate-sustainable future.

“By seizing the opportunities provided by green industries and supply chains, we can create the good green jobs of the future and ensure a fair transition away from fossil fuels.

“The role of private capital is fundamental to achieving this, and governments must do what they can to channel investment into areas that support transformational change.”

Khan said Cop26 was a “landmark” moment in the fight against climate change.

He said: “Climate action and economic growth must go hand in hand – in London I invest in green technology, which generates good quality jobs, for Londoners and across the UK.

“Reversing developments in relation to climate change will require record-breaking investments and coordinated action by all – cities, businesses, governments and communities.

“That’s why I’m committed to working with the Scottish Government to be a pioneer in green investment and I’m proud to announce that I’ll commit over £ 30 million in additional funding in London which will help promote up to £ 150 million in private investment in low-carbon projects and create jobs that will help achieve our 2030 grid-zero target. “
