British waitress wins High Court battle over Australia ” backpack tax ‘

An English backpacker who worked as a waitress in Sydney has won his battle for the so-called backpacker tax in the High Court.

The woman claimed she had been discriminated against because of her nationality when she was forced to pay tax at a rate other than Australian citizens.

Under an agreement between the UK and Australia, backpackers paid a fixed rate without the benefit of the tax-free limit.

Other backpackers caught by the same rule have been waiting for today’s decision.

More on the way.
