Scotland should opt for independence in order to “escape the constant crisis of Westminster control”, Ian Blackford will say.

The SNP’s leader in Westminster is expected to tell his party conference that the Tory government is “engrossed in sleaze, camaraderie and corruption” and is shifting from one crisis to another.

By claiming that independence is “within our reach”, Mr Blackford would argue that leaving Britain “is now the way to security and stability”.

In his virtual speech on the third day of the SNP conference, MEP Ross, Skye and Lochaber will say: “For years now, what we are experiencing is a Britain in constant crisis.

“And it’s a crisis that comes at a real cost.

“The cost of the Tory savings, the sky-high cost of Brexit, the cost of a Westminster government engulfed in sleaze, camaraderie and corruption.

“The cost of having a man like Boris Johnson as prime minister.

“It’s the crisis in Britain now – and it’s the cost we pay to be part of this union.

“Independence is now the path to security and stability – it offers an escape from the constant crisis of Westminster control.

“Built on the solid foundation of our own democratic decisions, independence provides the opportunity to build the post-pandemic future we all want to see.

“The chance to build a new Scotland that finally takes its natural place among the nations of the world.”

A spokesman for the British government said: “This is not the time for divisive constitutional arguments.

“Now, more than ever, people in Scotland want to see the British and Scottish governments work together to protect lives, jobs and recover from the effects of Covid-19 on our economy and public services.”
