President Biden said Wednesday that Republicans are ‘lying’ when they say Democrats want to ward off police.
The president went on to explain the various ways in which police work was to be reformed, and also refused to ever demand that the police be defused.
“I never said give up the police,” Biden claimed.
“They’re lying,” Biden said during a “town hall” on CNN when asked about Republican allegations that the Democratic Party supports firing the police.
Biden also said it would be a good idea to bring social workers, including psychiatrists, to crime scenes.

Last summer, Biden expressed support to take money from the police and redistribute them to other places.

“Yes, absolutely,” Biden said on the campaign track when asked if he agrees that “we can redirect some of it [police] financing. “
At City Hall, Biden also called for more police on the streets.
“We need more police officers, not fewer police officers, but we need those involved in the police force,” Biden said.
Many prominent members of the Democratic Party have explicitly called for police departments across the country to be defused, including reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who spotted a proposal to strip a billion dollars from the New York Police Department’s budget and suggested it was not enough.
“Defusing police means firing police,” the New York Democrat said said in a statement. “It does not mean budget tricks or fun math. It does not mean moving school police officers from the NYPD budget to the Ministry of Education budget so that the exact same police force remains in schools.”

Several Democracy-led cities have also moved to ward off police departments, including in Minneapolis, where George Floyd’s death caused massive unrest last summer, with local officials trying to disband police before returning after strict withdrawal from society.
