Atlanta, Boston and New York are voting for new mayors

Atlanta, Boston and New York awaited results in mayoral races on Tuesday as voters in each city voted for new leaders after tumultuous years marked by the Covid-19 pandemic, Black Lives Matter protests and – in the case of Atlanta and New York – rising to violent crime .

In Atlanta, where polling stations closed at 20.00 local time, crime was the central topic of the campaign among 14 candidates vying to succeed one-time mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms. Ms. Bottoms, whom President Biden considered a possible vice presidential candidate, chose not to seek re-election after protests last year were followed by vandalism, a police shooting that sparked further unrest and an increase in murders and other violent crimes.
