21-year-old SUNY Potsdam student’s accused killer arrested and charged, troopers say

Potsdam, NY – A 31-year-old man was arrested Saturday after he was accused of fatally shooting a 21-year-old SUNY Potsdam student Friday night near campus, troopers said.

Michael J. Snow, of Massena, was charged with second-degree murder, according to a news release issued Saturday by state police.

Elizabeth Howell, of Patterson in Putnam County, was found unconscious on the side of College Park Road with gunshot wounds around 5:51 pm Friday, troopers said.

Howell was a music education student at SUNY Potsdam Crane School of Music, school officials announced in a message to campus. She was expected to graduate this year.

She was shot on a street just behind the music school.

Howell was taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital where she died just before 7 pm Friday, school officials said.

Classes are canceled Monday to allow students to “support each other through this tragedy,” officials said.

The Crane School of Music has about 700 undergraduate and graduate students.

A shelter-in-place was ordered by school officials at around 7:19 pm Friday. At 9:45 pm it was lifted and the school advised students to travel in groups.

Snow was arraigned in Potsdam Town Court, troopers said. He was remanded to the St. Lawrence County Jail with no bail, they said.

Police ask anyone with any information about the shooting to call Potsdam Village Police at 315-265-2121 or University Police at 315-267-2222.
